TOWER OF PEACE
Rome is a city of peace that has for millenniums been a crossroads of civilizations and religions. It is a city that has always been considered hospitable and tolerant.
In this spirit, we have invited, together with FAO, a significant number of artists to be present with their video images, in an exhibition in favor of the underprivileged of the world and the innocent victims of terrorism and war.
These images, which serve to strengthen Rome's actions in favor of national and international solidarity, also emphasize the importance of artistic endeavor and experimentation in these times of tension; particularly regarding those forms of art that work with the media and create new forms of expression.
In fact, the TOWER OF PEACE will not only enhance Rome's vocation of universality and its role as an active memory of the past, but also its no less decisive role today in the production and critical fruition of contemporary art and audio-visuals.
EUR S.p.A. (Shareholder: Treasury Ministry 90%, Council of Rome 10%) was founded on 15 March 2000 following the transformation of Ente Eur, established in 1936 to host the Universal Exhibition of Rome.
The Company has an important patrimony, made up of buildings, areas given in leasing, parks and areas which can be built on.
EUR S.p.A. principal mission is the valorisation and management of this real estate, either through an offer of high quality technological services and through a wide range of new projects aiming at the construction of new buildings (Italia Conference Centre) and at the restoration and functional conversion of existing ones (Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, Palazzo dello Sport, Velodromo).
Its main goal is the creation of an innovative managing and developing territory model that will increase Eur district and Rome socio-economic patrimony.

Arte & Comunicazione
A cultural event with a new conception.
Devoted to contemporary audio vision. In Rome and throughout Italy. An international vocation. For the general public. And for specialists, artists, educators, students, enthusiasts and experts in mass telecommunications, television and cultural heritage.
An international exposition of works of art, television programs and electronic publishing aimed at the exploitation - both communicative and expressive - of contemporary audio-visual language: through photography and computers, monitor and web.
The 2002 Program offers - with its TOWER OF PEACE - a collective video installation at particularly significant urban sites in Rome (Eur, Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Roma Termini Station) an exhibition composed of electronic cinegraphs by artists, photographs from shows on current themes and from the FAO Photo Library, Company communications; and also international exhibitions of audio-visual work by independent artists, Broadcasters, multimedia publishers, contemporary art Museums, Academies and production Companies throughout the world who are committed to exploring the new languages of art and communications.
In particular, the Tv channel ARS TV NETWORK is the first exhibition of videoart and quality television created with advanced technologies by television and the Internet via satellite in a perspective that is not only multimedial but also transnational in design.
There are also numerous examples - presence and thoughts of the audio-visual artists - of a, possible and already active, democratic and expressively advanced response to the standardized, oppressive tendencies of economic, military, cultural and media globalization.
It is a worldwide artistic and communicative global but an alternative response to globalization: capable of speaking to everyone and not only the elite; and is also able to evaluate specific identities, both individual and local as well as collective.
It represents an assumption of responsibility on the part of the arts and artists - but also by broadcasters and those experimenting with the new languages of communication - strongly felt in the audio-visual world. An ethic and artistic action deriving from these same technologies and the same media (radio, tv, video, web, satellites) generally used for other purposes.
The extraordinary metaphysical architecture of the Palazzo della Civiltà - symbolism of the buildings in the Eur area and the future National Audio-visual Museum - has been transformed into a sculpture of electronic light and the TOWER OF PEACE by the images of artists and photographers from all over the world who are participating in the project. Its purpose is to help to overturn, and not only symbolically, the perverse dynamics that led to and followed upon the massacre of September 11, 2001 at the Twin Towers in New York and in Washington. It also emphasizes that an ethical and expressively diverse use of images and technologically advanced media - one opposed to the strategies of violence - is possible.
And it must be shown, spread and discussed.
